About the AES 2021 International Audio Education Conference

The Conference includes peer-reviewed paper presentations, workshops and daily plenary events focused on audio education, including curricular resources, teaching strategies and professional development for-and from-industry trainers, faculty and staff who are active instructors at the high-school, undergraduate, graduate and professional levels.

The pace of industrial, technical and social change has only accelerated since MTSU hosted the first AES Education Conference in the summer of 2013. Distance and online learning are no longer niche practices. Machine learning and intelligent automation influence many aspects of media production. The economics and underlying technologies for entertainment and communication continue to evolve rapidly, affecting our students and their career prospects. In this environment, there's a lot for us to discuss and learn from each other.

This three day Conference will be live via zoom channels in Central US Daylight Time (Nashville).

Mark Ethier

iZotope CEO & Co-founder

Mark Ethier is the co-founder and CEO of iZotope, an industry leading audio technology company based in Cambridge, MA. Driven by a passion for audio, iZotope develops intelligent audio technology that helps musicians, music producers, and audio post engineers focus on their craft rather than the tech behind it. As a musician first himself, Mark infuses a musician-focused sensibility into iZotope’s approach to building musical tools—bringing forward important elements of traditional studio equipment while innovating on new digital capabilities.

Under Mark’s leadership, iZotope pushes the boundaries of digital signal processing, tapping into modern technologies like machine learning, deep learning, and music information retrieval (MIR). This commitment is born from Mark’s background at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a dual major in both Computer Science and Music. A member of the Boston Committee for the New York Chapter of The Recording Academy®, Mark also serves on the Board of Directors of The Record Co., a non-profit music incubator whose mission is to promote the Boston music scene.

What the Masters Teach Us: Multitrack Recordings in Research and Education

Toby Seay – Drexel University , Kirk McNally – University of Victoria, Amandine Pras – University of Lethbridge, Nyssim Lefford – Luleå University of Technology, Paul Thompson – Leeds Beckett University
This workshop will focus on how multitrack audio archives of commercial music are used at post-secondary institutions like The University of Victoria and Drexel University, and more generally, how multitrack recordings are utilized as objects of study and as stimuli in student research. The panelists will address the advantages, challenges and opportunities of including multitrack recordings into the teaching and research within higher education programs.
